Russia and Egypt raised their bilateral relations to a strategic partnership

June 23, 2009

The Treaty on Strategic Partnership signed by Dmitry Medvedev and Hosni Mubarak specifies the long-term directions of the two countries' development and the entire range of Russian-Egyptian relations in the years ahead, the President of Russia emphasised.

Among the promising spheres of cooperation Dmitry Medvedev cited were energy, including nuclear energy, high-tech industries, and the space sector.

The Treaty [on Strategic Partnership] between the Russian Federation and the Arab Republic of Egypt specifies the main areas of bilateral interaction. In particular, the parties agreed to consider setting up a free trade zone between the two countries, to develop the military and military technical cooperation that they have traditionally supported, as well as promote cooperation in science, education and tourism.

President of Russia highly appreciated the trusting, friendly atmosphere which, he noted, has always characterised the Russian-Egyptian dialogue at the highest level.
