Vladimir Putin met at the Kremlin with President of the Republic of South Ossetia Leonid Tibilov to discuss a wide range of matters concerning bilateral relations and coordination in ensuring stability and security in the Trans-Caucasus region.
Following the talks, Mr Putin and Mr Tibilov signed the Agreement between the Russian Federation and the Republic of South Ossetia on Alliance and Integration. The Agreement was concluded for 25 years with the possibility of subsequent ten-year extensions.
Under the Agreement, the two countries will establish a common defence and security space, allow free movement across the Russia-South Ossetia border, integrate their customs services, develop cooperation between their interior ministries, and simplify the procedures for obtaining Russian citizenship. The agreement also covers the social dimension, including pensions.
The agreement constitutes a basic document for gradual establishment of greater cooperation between the two countries in the social, economic and humanitarian sectors and in foreign policy matters, and defence and security, acting to preserve South Ossetia’s state sovereignty.
The two presidents also made press statements.
