Dmitry Medvedev sent his congratulations to the members of the 56th Russian Antarctic Expedition on the International Day of Antarctica, which is celebraton the southern hemisphere winter solstice.
The message reads, in part:
“This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Antarctic Treaty. The adoption of this unique international legal instrument was the beginning of systematic research of the most remote parts of the planet and has contributed to the rapid development of many new technologies in geology, microbiology and ecology.
Today, the 56th Russian Antarctic Expedition is successfully working on the continent and its members protect Russia's security interests in the region. Working in a harsh climate, away from your families and friends, you have been brought closer by the spirit of camaraderie and mutual support.
I am sure this will continue.”
