Vladimir Putin signed the federal law increasing the role of political parties in the functioning of bodies of state power of the subjects of the Russian Federation

January 1, 2006

The document is named ”On Making Amendments to Article 18 of the Federal Law ”On Common Principles of Organizing Legislative (Representative) and Executive Bodies of State Power of Subjects of the Russian Federation“ and to the Federal Law ”On Political Parties“.

The federal law provides that, following the elections of the legislative (representative) bodies of state power of a subject of the Russian Federation, the political party whose list of candidates was authorized to receive deputy seats and who was then allocated the highest number of deputy seats has the right to initiate a review by the appropriate body of state power of the proposal to the President concerning the candidate for the highest official (leader of the supreme executive body of state power) of the subject of the Russian Federation.

This proposal by a political party is subject to obligatory consideration by the legislative (representative) body of state power of the subject of the Federation. In the case that this proposal is supported by the majority of votes among the elected deputies it will then be sent to the President.
