The Cooperation 2009 exercises mark a new stage in developing the CSTO Collective Rapid Reaction Force and building the capability to respond to today's threats

October 16, 2009

Dmitry Medvedev used these words to sum up the results of the large-scale complex exercise of the rapid reaction force. The President said this is a landmark in the Collective Security Treaty Organisation’s development and takes member countries further along the road to integration.

Mr Medvedev also noted that it took only a short time – less than a year – to establish the CRRF, from the initial proposal in December 2008, to the real exercises just carried out.

The CSTO member states decided to establish the CRRF at the organisation’s summit on February 24, 2009, in Moscow in order to protect member states’ territorial integrity and sovereignty, guarantee security and respond to large-scale crisis situations in member countries.

The CSTO member states are Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
