The presidents of Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan have declared the establishment of a customs union starting January 1, 2010, and reaffirmed their objective of establishing the Common Economic Area between the three countries by January 1, 2012

The three presidents made these statements in a joint declaration adopted at an informal summit between the leaders of Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan in Almaty (Kazakhstan).

The three countries’ leaders said that they support the customs union’s expansion and would like to see their partners in EurAsEC and the CIS join it in the future.

Among other issues discussed at the informal summit were economic integration and responses to regional challenges, in particular fighting drugs trafficking, terrorism and organised crime. Dmitry Medvedev shared with his colleagues his impressions on taking part in the UN Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen.
