SCO 15th anniversary summit

June 24, 2016, Tashkent

Vladimir Putin took part in a summit of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Council of Heads of State marking the organisation’s 15th anniversary.

On the summit agenda were steps to make the  SCO’s work more effective and develop member countries’ cooperation in priority areas such as security, counterterrorism, economic cooperation, humanitarian ties, and Eurasian integration.

The summit participants exchanged views on key international and regional issues, including the situation in Afghanistan and the Middle East.

The summit concluded with the adoption of the Tashkent Declaration, the approval of the 2016–2020 Action Plan for the SCO Development Strategy, and the signing of a package of other documents. The SCO countries’ leaders also witnessed the signing of memorandums on the procedures and timetable for India and Pakistan’s accession to the SCO. On the summit’s sidelines, a programme for developing tourism cooperation between the member states was also approved.

Vladimir Putin and President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov laid flowers at the monument to Alexander Pushkin in Tashkent’s centre.

Concluding his working visit to Uzbekistan, the President of Russia answered journalists’ questions.
