Dmitry Medvedev met with permanent members of the Security Council

On the agenda were domestic and foreign policy matters, and also measures to neutralise terrorist and extremist threats in the North Caucasus, following on from the meeting on this subject the President held in Stavropol on August 19.

Also discussed was the situation at the Sayano-Shushenskaya Hydroelectric Station. Mr Medvedev reminded the Security Council members that following these events a comprehensive inspection of the country’s hydroelectric power facilities must be carried out.

The President informed the meeting about a telephone conversation he had today with Prime Minister Vladimir Putin. The Prime Minister, currently visiting Khakasia, briefed the President on the preliminary results of the investigation into the accident’s causes, and also on measures being taken to maintain energy supply in the Siberian Federal District. Mr Medvedev and Mr Putin also discussed the question of compensation payments to the families of those killed or missing in the hydroelectric power station accident.

Mr Medvedev told the Security Council members that he plans to come back to the energy supply issue in the Siberian Federal District at a meeting he will hold in the Republic of Buryatia on August 24.

Taking part in the meeting were Chairman of the Federation Council Sergei Mironov, Chairman of the State Duma Boris Gryzlov, Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office Sergei Naryshkin, Government Chief of Staff Sergei Sobyanin, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Director of the Federal Security Service Alexander Bortnikov, Secretary of the Security Council Nikolai Patrushev, and Director of the Foreign Intelligence Service Mikhail Fradkov.
