Dmitry Medvedev spoke at 64th session of UN General Assembly

September 24, 2009, New York

In his speech, President Medvedev touched on the most topical issues and challenges on the international agenda requiring joint efforts by the international community and direct involvement of the UN. Mr Medvedev addressed matters of disarmament and security, including energy security, as well as the protection of human rights and universal values.

According to Dmitry Medvedev, above and beyond the economic crisis, global development continues to be threatened by regional and local conflicts, terrorism, transnational crime, food shortages and climate change.

The President of Russia separately addressed the issue of UN reform. Russia considers it important to duly strengthen the UN's capacity so that it can rationally adapt to new global realities, strengthen its influence, maintain its intergovernmental nature, and ensure the stability of key provisions of its Charter, Mr Medvedev said.
