75th anniversary of victory in the Battle of Stalingrad

February 2, 2018, Volgograd

On the 75th anniversary of the victory in the Battle of Stalingrad, the President visited the Battle of Stalingrad State Historical Memorial Museum on Mamayev Kurgan. He laid a wreath at the Eternal Flame in the Hall of Military Glory and honoured the memory of those who perished with a minute of silence.

Vladimir Putin also laid flowers at the grave of Marshal of the Soviet Union Vasily Chuikov, commander the 62nd Army (8th Guards Army), which distinguished itself during the defence of Stalingrad.

On February 2, the Volgograd Region became the national centre of events marking the 75th anniversary of the Nazis’ defeat by the Soviet Army in the Battle of Stalingrad.

The Battle of Stalingrad was one of the longest and largest confrontations in World War II. The battle was a turning point in the war and became a precursor of Victory on May 9, 1945.

The President also addressed a ceremonial event marking the anniversary.
