Dmitry Medvedev congratulated President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy and European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton on their elections

November 20, 2009

The message to Herman Van Rompuy reads, in part:

“I hope that your work at this post will help the development of cooperation between Russia and the European Union. The last EU-Russia summit in Stockholm clearly demonstrated that as natural partners and close neighbours, we can resolve all cooperation-related problems in a constructive manner. A new, important step has been taken on the way to building an authentic, equitable strategic partnership that benefits all the peoples of Greater Europe.

You are taking on this important position during a difficult period – the beginning of the practical implementation of reform in the European Union and the formation of its governing bodies structure, based on the Lisbon Treaty provisions.

I hope that the processes of consolidating the European Union will also help deepen our cooperation in key issues on the European agenda.”

The President of Russia’s message to Catherine Ashton reads, in part:

“I know you as a strong supporter of closer relations between Russia and the EU.

As the EU Commissioner for Foreign Trade, you demonstrated the qualities of an experienced negotiator who intends to resolve existing problems in a constructive manner, taking into account the interests and concerns of other partners. This was once again shown during our talks in Stockholm, whose outcomes we regard very highly.

I am certain that your work at your new post will contribute significantly to further expanding cooperation between Russia and the European Union on the international arena.”
