Dmitry Medvedev and President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev took part in opening ceremony of the first stage of Volga bridge crossing, a new double-deck bridge over the Volga

The bridge is part of the federal target programme Modernisation of Russia's Transport System 2002–2010, and is an important segment of the transport corridor linking the European part of Russia with the Urals, Siberia and Far East.

After the opening ceremony, Dmitry Medvedev and Ilham Aliyev visited an exhibition of advanced transportation technologies.
