Telephone conversation with President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan

December 11, 2019

Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with President of the Republic of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the initiative of the Turkish side.

The Turkish president briefed Vladimir Putin on his meetings at the recent NATO summit in London.

A number of priority subjects in bilateral relations were discussed including trade and economic issues. The further implementation of plans in energy and military-technical cooperation was emphasised.

The situation in Syria gained a special focus. The leaders called for increasing coordinated efforts to fight the terrorist threat including in the Idlib Province and in the country’s northeast. The necessity to fully honour Russian-Turkish agreements on interaction in these regions was stressed.

Vladimir Putin and Recep Tayyip Erdogan are counting on the effectiveness of the Syrian Constitutional Committee to further facilitate the political dialogue.

The Libya settlement issue was also touched on. The presidents expressed concern over the armed clashes around Tripoli. A prompt ceasefire and the resumption of intra-Libyan peace talks would contribute to the normalisation of the situation.

It was agreed to continue contacts at different levels.
