Dmitry Medvedev send messages of congratulations on Canada's national holiday, Canada Day to Governor General of Canada Michaelle Jean and Prime Minister Stephen Harper

July 1, 2008

The message to Governor General of Canada Michaelle Jean read, in part:

”I am pleased with the positive dynamics of trade and economic cooperation between Russia and Canada and the expansion of regional ties. We highly appreciate your personal involvement in the progressive development of the Russian-Canadian partnership, Canada’s constructive contribution to the strengthening of international security and stability, and the intensive dialogue between our countries on a wide range of international issues.

We are determined to extend our fruitful cooperation in all areas.

I wish you and the friendly people of Canada well-being, peace and prosperity“.

The message to Prime Minister Stephen Harper read, in part:

”Allow me to convey to you and the entire Canadian people our warmest congratulations and best wishes in connection with your national holiday, Canada Day.

Our peoples are linked not only by time-tested firm and lasting relationships, which in recent years have steadily and dynamically developed in all areas, but also by an atmosphere of good-neighbourliness, as defined by our unique northern dimension.

Finally, we are united by our passionate love for that great Canadian invention: hockey. There is a symbolic appropriateness to the fact that the Winter Olympic Games will be held in Vancouver in 2010, and that the Olympic torch will be passed on to Sochi.

I welcome the opportunity to meet you personally at the forthcoming G8 summit in Japan“.
