The Russian President toured the exhibits, looked over some of the documents and left a message in the book of honoured guests.

The Heydar Aliyev Foundation was established by the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on March 10, 2004. The formal opening was held on May 10, 2004 on the anniversary of the birth of Heydar Aliev.

The objectives of the Foundation are perpetuating the memory of the first Heydar Aliyev, President of Azerbaijan, popularising his heritage, and supporting projects for the development of science, education, culture, health and sports.

Earlier Dmitry Medvedev laid wreaths at the monument for fallen heroes and at the grave of former Azerbaijani President Heydar Aliyev and laid flowers at the grave of his wife Zarifa Aliyev.
