Dmitry Medvedev discussed Russia's international cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking with Federal Drug Control Service Director Viktor Ivanov

February 16, 2010, Gorki, Moscow Region

President Medvedev singled out joint operations and improving the international legal framework for drug control as priorities for such cooperation. According to Dmitry Medvedev, this legal framework requires adjustments in light of the changing situation in the world, particularly in Afghanistan and Latin America.

Mr Ivanov reported to President Medvedev that in 2009 Russian authorities had seized 46 tonnes of drugs, that is 20 percent more than in 2008, and this amount contains over half a billion doses of narcotics. 90 percent of these drugs were of Afghan origin.

Dmitry Medvedev stressed that Afghanistan is in a difficult situation and that Russia is trying to help it. The President also noted the importance of cooperation in drug control with the United States and other countries.
