According to current legislation, the party with a majority in the regional legislature presents gubernatorial candidates to the President. United Russia benefits from such a majority in Kemerovo Region. On March 1 United Russia leaders presented the President with a list of three candidates for regional governor, including the candidacy of Aman Tuleyev, who has been Governor of the region since 1997. His current term expires on April 20.
