Vladimir Putin congratulated members of the Russian Geographical Society and all specialists working in geography and related fields on Geographer's Day.
The message reads, in part:
“It is deeply symbolic that we celebrate this wonderful holiday on August 18, the day the Russian Geographical Society was founded in 1845. Over that time, the Russian Geographical Society has played a truly unique role in the development of geography, climatology, meteorology and other related sciences in our country, organised large-scale expeditions to explore little-studied regions of the planet, and done a lot for public education. The Society revealed to the world the names of our outstanding scientists, travellers, and seafarers who laid down the traditions of selfless service to the Fatherland for the benefit of strengthening its economic might and increasing its invaluable natural, historical and cultural heritage.
I am pleased to note that today the tasks addressed by the Russian Geographical Society unite a large number of energetic, caring people of various ages and jobs, as well as volunteers. The Society brings to life sought-after scientific, educational, environmental, and creative projects, such as the now legendary nationwide Geographical Dictation. And of course, on this festive day, I would like to especially note the great and truly selfless work of geography teachers. They help students to discover a huge world of knowledge about our planet, instil in them love for their country and hometown, and in many ways shape young people’s worldview and horizons.”
