The recent tragic events in Moscow and Kizlyar (Daghestan) left their mark on the meeting. The President proposed that the parliamentary party leaders hold consultations on the political and other consequences of these events. Mr Medvedev said it is important to consolidate the views of all public groups on the fight against terrorism and said he is confident that the leaders of the country’s main political parties have no differences on this subject.

The meeting’s participants called the President’s attention to the way some media have covered this week’s tragic events, attempting to convince people that they are without protection and that the state is unable to prevent terrorism. Mr Medvedev stressed that attempts to portray the fight againstterrorism as opposing civil society and people's liv are unacceptabl since they open the way to absolutely immoral conclusions.

The President also spoke about the responsibility of accomplices in terrorism crimes, no matter what their particular involvement in organising these crimes. People involved in organising terrorist attacks should expect no leniency, regardless of the part they play.

Mr Medvedev added that, as President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, he would concentrate his efforts on protecting people and punishing criminals.

Other subjects discussed at the meeting included the results of the latest regional elections, preparations for the sixty-fifth anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War, and current domestic political issues.

Taking part in the meeting were Chairman of United Russia’s Supreme Council and Speaker of the State Duma Boris Gryzlov, Chairman of A Just Russia and Speaker of the Federation Council Sergei Mironov, Chairman of the Russian Federation Communist Party (KPRF) Central Committee and Communist Party Duma faction leader Gennady Zyuganov, and Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) and Deputy Speaker of the State Duma Vladimir Zhirinovsky.
