Vladimir Putin congratulated Russian polar explorers on their professional holiday, Polar Explorer’s Day.
The message reads, in part:
“We are sincerely proud of the outstanding achievements of our prominent compatriots who have devoted themselves to studying and developing the Arctic and Antarctica, and who have laid a reliable foundation for our scientific presence in these strategically important areas of the planet.
I am pleased to note that the current generation of scientists and geologists, builders and oil industry workers, pilots, sailors and representatives of other careers are honourably carrying on the traditions of this dedicated and selfless work. Today, their outstanding competence, courage and a responsible approach to their work make it possible to successfully implement daring and ambitious programmes in polar regions.
Work is underway to build modern science clusters and research stations such as Snezhinka in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Area and inter-university campus Arctic Star in Arkhangelsk. We are developing abundant mineral deposits, including those on the Russian continental shelf, and paying great attention to the development of the Northern Sea Route. A new wintering facility has started operating at the legendary Vostok station in Antarctica. And, of course, I want to specifically mention such significant and much-needed initiative of polar explorers as the Meeting of Generations educational project. This initiative aims to acquaint young men and women with promising Arctic and Antarctic careers and to help them choose their own professional path in life.”
