Greetings on flag-raising ceremony on Yakutia nuclear icebreaker

December 28, 2024

Vladimir Putin sent greetings to the participants in the flag-raising ceremony on the Yakutia nuclear icebreaker in St Petersburg.

The message reads, in part:

“The successful implementation of this monumental project reflects the innovative efforts of scientists, the dedication of shipbuilders at the Baltic Shipyard, and the expertise of specialists from numerous Russian companies. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved in the creation of this modern vessel, incorporating cutting-edge technologies, advanced materials, and innovative engineering solutions.

I would like to highlight that every icebreaker built at domestic shipyards significantly enhances the safety of Arctic navigation, improves transport accessibility of the region, and ensures year-round navigation along the Northern Sea Route. It is especially fitting that the flag-raising ceremony on the Yakutia coincides with a milestone anniversary for Russia’s nuclear icebreaker fleet: 65 years ago, in December 1959, the Lenin – the world’s first civilian vessel powered by a nuclear reactor – was launched.

I am confident that the Yakutia icebreaker will enhance the capabilities of the domestic nuclear fleet, contribute to addressing key multifaceted challenges facing the national economy, and further solidify Russia’s status as a naval power.”
