Dmitry Medvedev congratulated employees and veterans in the communication and media sector on their professional holiday, Radio Day

May 7, 2010

The congratulatory message reads, in part:

“It is with pleasure that I congratulate you on Radio Day and on the 115th anniversary of Russian scientist and engineer Alexander Popov’s discovery of wireless signal transmission. His invention opened the way for humanity to enter the modern telecommunications era.

Your professional holiday was established in the spring of 1945. Now, on the eve of the 65th anniversary of victory in the  Great Patriotic War I address special words of gratitude to those who ensured the reliable communications and signals systems so vital to the battle fronts and the rear during the difficult war years.

Telecommunications play an exceptionally important part in Russia’s development today. Modernising our communications infrastructure and information networks and spreading the use of advanced technology are essential preconditions for building an innovative economy and improving our people’s living standards. I am sure that we will successfully reach these goals.”
