Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu briefed the President by telephone about the operations underway to rescue the miners.
Mr Medvedev instructed Mr Shoigu to keep him updated on the rescue operations and take every step necessary to save lives.
According to preliminary reports, more than 300 miners were underground when the first blast occurred. There are casualties.
