Dmitry Medvedev signed a law ratifying the agreement between the governments of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tajikistan on settling Tajikistan’s state-loan debt to Russia

July 14, 2008

Tajikistan will pay its debt to Russia ahead of schedule by transferring to Russian ownership the state-owned Nurek optical-electronic space control centre, with the remainder of the debt to be invested in the construction of Sangtudin Hydroelectric Power Station 1 on Tajikistan’s territory.

The Nurek optical-electronic space control centre is designed to automatically detect objects in space to an altitude of 40,000 kilometres. It can identify their orbit, type, status and national origin. It can also track objects not from Earth such as asteroids, comets and meteorites.

The Nurek centre is located 2,200 metres above sea level in the Sanglok Mountains, which are part of the Pamir range.
