Vladimir Putin: Citizens of Russia, friends,
On this Sunday, 14 March, the presidential elections will be held in the Russian Federation. And today, as head of state, I must address you to talk to you about the importance of this event.
Direct elections are one of the most important achievements of democracy. The result of these elections will have a direct influence on the development of Russia.
We are getting accustomed to democratic procedures for electing the authorities. However, this should not reduce the significance of these events in the public mind. Let us imagine only for a second what would happen to the country if the supreme bodies of administration were not established.
This is why every person's vote has enormous significance. I must stress: only the support of citizens will determine the country's course in the years to come and make it possible to take important steps towards developing the economy and improving living standards. Only your support will give the future President of Russia confidence in his power. Participation in the elections is the unique right to influence the course of events in your own country.
There are no intermediary stages between voters and presidential candidates. In accordance with the Constitution, citizens of Russia directly – that is, personally – elect the body of deputies, the heads of their cities, towns and villages, the governors, and, on 14 March, the President of the country.
This is extremely important for all of you, and for the future of Russia.
