Beginning of Meeting with Acting President of Moldova Mihai Ghimpu

October 9, 2009, Chisinau

President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev: All has gone well and the organisation [of the summit] was very good. I want to thank you for this work and say that despite the various domestic problems you had to deal with giving shape to a new political configuration, everything was organised to a high standard.

I think it is very important that we have come here and taken part in this CIS summit. I want to thank you also for Moldova’s presidency at this time, because it is always hard to do things on the roll, as it were, but everything has gone well. We have approved the documents and discussed all the issues, and our discussions were substantive, what’s more, and not just an empty formality. I think that it is to Moldova’s credit that everything took place in such a constructive spirit.

As far as the summit goes then, I think it was a success, even if not all of the participants are happy with this or that wording or agreement. But this is normal, this is life, and we will continue our work.

Acting President of Moldova Mihai Ghimpu: I am very pleased that you have seen for yourself that we seek good relations and want to build up and strengthen our ties. We should not look at the past, at yesterday, but should build the future, work for tomorrow. Our government and our coalition, the Alliance for European Integration, genuinely seek good bilateral relations.

We are fully aware that we cannot have any other relations but good relations. There are problems we will come back to, problems on which we will sit down together and reflect on how to reach a consensus. This is in the interests of our citizens, of everyone in Russia and the Republic of Moldova, regardless of their nationality.

Dmitry Medvedev: I fully agree. Our countries not only can but simply must have full-fledged friendly, sincere, mutually beneficial and at the same time pragmatic relations based on our history and our common interests. The Russian Federation is ready to build such relations with Moldova. Not just relations between personalities but true relations between our states are important to us. This is the main thing.
