Speech at ceremony marking the completion of China-Russia oil pipeline

September 27, 2010, Beijing

President of China Hu Jintao (retranslated): Dear friends and comrades,

It is my great pleasure today to be here, with President Medvedev, at the opening ceremony for the China-Russia oil pipeline.

First of all, on behalf of the Chinese government, I would like to warmly congratulate everyone on the completion of the China-Russia pipeline and express my sincere gratitude to the Chinese and Russian builders who were in the forefront of this construction project. Its successful completion can rightly be called an example of our cooperation in the energy sector, which cooperation is based on the principles of reciprocity and mutual benefit.

I very much hope that after this ceremony, the corresponding companies and departments in China and Russia will make further efforts to promote our cooperation in order to take Chinese-Russian relations and strategic partnership to a higher level.

President of Russia Dmitry Medvedev: Friends,

It is a great pleasure for me to be present at this ceremony. I sincerely congratulate all of our Chinese colleagues and Russian builders on the full completion of construction of this pipeline between the Russian Federation and the People’s Republic of China. This is a major project that will truly bring our nations even closer and allow us to resolve a wide variety of economic and social challenges.

Please allow me to once again thank everyone who is working on this project, both on the Russian side and the Chinese side, including staff and workers of Transneft and CNPC, and everyone who put their heart and soul into this project, everyone who is working on it every day.

Indeed, I absolutely agree with what President Hu Jintao just said about how this project strengthens our strategic partnership and cooperation. It is directed toward the future, it is mutually beneficial, and I am certain that it will be advantageous to both our nations.

Good luck! I wish you all the best!
