Expanded Security Council meeting on fire safety measures for strategic facilities

August 4, 2010, The Kremlin, Moscow

Dmitry Medvedev held a meeting to draft and approve additional fire safety measures for strategic facilities.

Minister of Emergency Situations Sergei Shoigu reported on the current situation and measures taken. Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin talked about the situation concerning energy sector facilities, including the oil and gas complex. CEO of Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation Sergei Kiriyenko spoke about fire-fighting measures being taken at nuclear power stations and other sector enterprises and facilities, paying particular attention to the complicated situation unfolding in the city of Sarov (Nizhny Novgorod Region), home to the Federal Nuclear Centre.

Other participants at the meeting included Defence Minister Anatoly Serdyukov, Minister of the Interior Rashid Nurgaliyev, and Director of the Federal Penitentiary Service Alexander Reimer.

In particular, the President gave the Government two days to draw up a new list of potentially dangerous sites.

Mr Medvedev also reprimanded Admiral Vladimir Vysotsky, commander of Russia’s naval forces, and his first deputy, Admiral Alexander Tatarinov, for incompetence, and fired a number of senior Defence Ministry officials over the fire at a naval base in Moscow Region’s Kolomna County.

The situation with wild fires in Russia remains difficult. The fires have killed several dozen people and left several thousand homeless.
