First Deputy Prime Minister Igor Shuvalov and Presidential Aide Igor Levitin co-chaired a joint meeting of the Government Commission for Road Safety and the State Council working group on preparing the State Council Presidium meeting On Road Safety in the Russian Federation.
Governor of Vladimir Region Svetlana Orlova, who heads the working group, and Head of the Main Directorate for Road Traffic Safety of the Russian Interior Ministry Viktor Nilov, who heads the editorial group, reported on the work done to draft the report that covers the main areas of activity to improve road safety.
Among the speakers at the joint session of the Government Commission and the Working Group were Communications and Mass Media Minister Nikolai Nikiforov and Transport Minister Maxim Sokolov.
Taking part in the meeting were representatives of federal and regional executive bodies of power and experts.
Meeting participants noted that over the period the number of road accident casualties has gone down. Nevertheless, the issue of reducing the mortality rate in road accidents remains acute.
The meeting considered ways to improve the state of automobile roads and streets in residential areas, issues pertaining to development of driver training system, enhancing child passenger safety and promoting a law-abiding behaviour on the roads.
