Meeting of State Council working group on Russia’s environmental development for the good of future generations

November 2, 2016, Moscow

Presidential Aide and Secretary of the State Council Igor Levitin chaired the third meeting of the State Council working group preparing an upcoming State Council meeting on Russia’s environmental development for the good of future generations.

Taking part in the meeting were the heads of the relevant federal ministries, services and agencies, regional environmental departments actively involved in environmental protection projects, and representatives of the academic, expert and business communities.

Head of the working group, Governor of Chelyabinsk Region Boris Dubrovsky briefed the meeting on the drafting of the report to be presented at the State Council meeting.

Head of the drafting group, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment Murad Kerimov presented the report’s main outlines and explained how the drafting group’s members have carried out a large amount of analytical work to identify possible solutions to Russia’s environmental issues.

The report presents the possible directions for progress towards an economy that raises people’s prosperity and ensures social justice while at the same time reducing the risk of environmental degradation. This risk can be reduced by decreasing the burden people place on the environment, making natural resource consumption and the economy’s energy use more efficient, improving legal regulation in the areas of natural resource use and environmental protection, modernising production facilities, and ensuring effective economic growth while reducing harmful emissions.

The meeting participants commented on the report and proposed additions that will be taken into account in further drafting and preparation of documents for the State Council meeting in December.
