Earlier in the day, Mr Putin sent Mr Lukashenko a message of greetings.
The Russian President’s message reads, in part:
“Over your years of work as head of state, you have earned great respect among your compatriots and considerable influence abroad as a responsible and far-sighted leader who has done much for Belarus’ socioeconomic development and to defend its foreign policy interests.
You have made a great personal contribution to strengthening the friendly ties between our countries and speeding up the mutually advantageous integration processes underway within the [Russia-Belarus] Union State and the Eurasian Economic Union.
I reaffirm our readiness to continue our friendly dialogue and constructive work together on current matters on the bilateral, regional and international agendas. I am certain that this is in the fundamental interests of the brotherly peoples of Russia and Belarus”.
