On behalf of all the Spanish people and on his own behalf the King of Spain expressed sincere sympathy following the natural disasters that have struck Russia, and his condolences with regard to the lives lost as a result of the forest fires.
HM Juan Carlos noted that Spain has always had friendly and kind feelings toward Russia and is now ready to provide necessary assistance and deliver fire-fighting equipment.
Dmitry Medvedev thanked the King for his words of sympathy and willingness to aid in fire extinguishing. The King of Spain and the President of Russia discussed specific aspects of respective cooperation.
During the conversation, Dmitry Medvedev and Juan Carlos I also exchanged views on current and prospect issues of Russian-Spanish cooperation, noting with satisfaction the high degree of implementation of agreements reached during the President of Russia’s state visit to Spain in 2009. They also discussed various matters pertaining to preparations for a major event in bilateral relations: organising the Year of Russia in Spain and the Year of Spain in Russia in 2011.
