Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with Prime Minister of the United Kingdom David Cameron on the British side’s initiative.
Mr Putin and Mr Cameron discussed various issues of bilateral cooperation in the political, trade and economic spheres, including cooperation in energy.
The two leaders gave a positive assessment to the first meeting in a new dialogue format on international, military and political issues with participation of the two countries’ foreign ministers and defence ministers on March 13 in London.
Vladimir Putin and David Cameron stressed the importance of close coordination between the UK and Russian presidency of the G20 and G8. It was agreed that new one-on-one meetings will be held within the framework of the G8 summit in Lough Erne, Northern Ireland, and the G20 summit in St Petersburg.
In exchanging views on the international agenda, particular attention was given to the situation in Syria. It was noted that despite some disagreement about approaches, both Russia and the United Kingdom believe that the optimal solution is a political settlement of the situation through negotiation.
During the discussion of the financial crisis in Cyprus, the two sides expressed hope that an effective and professionally calibrated plan would be developed to resolve the existing problems.
