During his working visit to St Petersburg, Aide to the President Nikolai Patrushev chaired a meeting of the Russian Maritime Board Presidium. The meeting participants discussed measures to fulfill the city’s transport, industrial, scientific and education potential in the interests of maritime activities. Governor of St Petersburg Alexander Beglov presented a keynote report.
A Council on Maritime Activities was established in St Petersburg in 2004, branching out into several sections and permanent commissions supervising the development of coastal infrastructure, shipbuilding, cargo operations, environmental safety, maritime and river tourism, preservation of marine legacy, and other issues. It was noted that the sections and commissions had accumulated significant experience in cooperation between regional executive bodies, various enterprises, state and public organisations.
Following the Maritime Board Presidium meeting, instructions were issued to review and evaluate St Petersburg’s experience, and to prepare recommendations for applying this experience to the work of other regional maritime councils.
On the same day, Nikolai Patrushev visited St Petersburg State Marine Technical University and chaired a meeting on improving the quality of professional training in the shipbuilding industry. The meeting participants specifically focused on mathematics and natural sciences at schools, as well as on increasing the effectiveness of degree programmes and vocational training in shipbuilding and associated programmes on machine and device engineering.
