Meeting with President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev

May 8, 2016, The Kremlin, Moscow

Vladimir Putin met at the Kremlin with President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev.

Mr Nazarbayev arrived in Russia to take part in celebrations marking the 71st anniversary of Victory in the  Great Patriotic War.

President of Russia Vladimir Putin: Mr Nazarbayev, I would like to express my gratitude to you for finding it possible to spend another holiday, our shared holiday – the Day of Victory in the Great Patriotic War – with us in Moscow, to attend the celebratory military parade.

This is definitely a sign of our special, allied relations. We greatly appreciate this and would like to thank you for this.

We are confident that our relations will develop as positively and multi-dimensionally as before. Moreover, what you have done today will certainly enhance our trust and will create a good environment for furthering our friendly ties tomorrow.

Thank you very much.

President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev: Thank you, Mr Putin.

I have indeed come here to congratulate you on this great occasion, our common celebration of the 71st anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. I came here also to congratulate you on Russia’s great scientific and technical achievement – the launch that took place at the Vostochny Space Launch Centre. There are probably very few countries that can build an ultramodern space launch centre today, but you have achieved this and it will become part of Russia’s history and will be remembered by generations to come.

As your ally and close partner and neighbour, I am full of admiration for this and have come to congratulate you. Thank you for finding time for me.

We have many meetings on the agenda this year. The Supreme Council of  the Eurasian Economic Union will meet at the end of this month in Astana, and we will discuss our various matters there. We have the  Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in Tashkent, and we will hold our regional forum in September, and then there is also the Council of  CIS Heads of State meeting in Bishkek.

We thus have a lot of work ahead, many meetings, and this is the way it should be. The Eurasian Union continues working at this difficult time, and we hold the presidency in this organisation. I will consult with you on certain matters.

We made the right choice in establishing this union. It is developing as planned. Currently, we are going through a crisis, but the processes underway can be overcome.

Let me congratulate you once again on your successes and victories and wish you all the very best. Mr Putin, I wish you good health and further success.

Vladimir Putin: Thank you very much.
