On the second day of his trip to Primorye Territory, Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office Sergei Ivanov chaired a meeting on implementing presidential instructions on protecting the Amur tiger and Amur leopard. Mr Ivanov also met with Primorye Territory Governor Vladimir Miklushevsky.
During the meeting Sergei Ivanov observed that decisions taken in recent years have helped make significant progress in the fight against hunting and trading endangered animals.
The Chief of Staff also called for tougher legislation on hunting and forest conservation in places where rare cats, the Amur tiger and Amur leopard, live.
In addition, Mr Ivanov talked about the need to clearly identify the conservation status of forests where authorities plan to create a specially protected area for breeding Amur tigers.
Sergei Ivanov also said that the pipeline to a [planned] LNG plant in Primorye Territory will not affect Leopards’ Land national park. The project will be subject to stringent environmental review, Mr Ivanov said.
Yesterday the Chief of Staff visited Leopards’ Land national park along the sea, saw the Amur leopard’s typical habitat and looked at methods used for observing these animals.
