Meeting on providing aid for Ukrainians seeking temporary asylum in Russia

June 19, 2014, Rostov Region

During a working trip1 to Rostov Region, Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office Sergei Ivanov held a meeting on providing aid for Ukrainians seeking temporary asylum on Russian territory.

Mr Ivanov ordered the law enforcement agencies to take extra measures to ensure law and order in Rostov Region and other regions neighbouring Ukraine, which have seen a big influx of Ukrainian citizens. Mr Ivanov also said that more Federal Migration Service officials could be needed in Rostov Region and Crimea.

The Chief of Staff said that besides Rostov Region, a number of Russian regions could provide assistance to people fleeing the military operations in eastern Ukraine. Mr Ivanov noted that the Government has already approved a resolution to give Rostov Region 240 million rubles [around $7 million], to cover a month’s needs. Sergei Ivanov asked everyone concerned to resolve as fast as possible all the issues related to the refugees’ temporary settlement, noting that these include housing, food, medicines, and psychological help.

The meeting also discussed the possibility of including Rostov Region and Stavropol Territory on the list of regions that are part of the state programme for voluntary resettlement to Russia of compatriots living abroad. Mr Ivanov noted that this programme helps Russians returning to their homeland sort out their employment and education needs, and in the Far East, participants in the programme receive financial assistance amounting to several hundred thousand rubles.
