Sergei Ivanov delivered the President of Russia’s greetings to staff and veterans of Prosecutor General’s Office on their professional holiday.

In his speech, the Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office stressed that prosecution officers must monitor the implementation of regional social programmes for which the state has allotted unprecedentedly significant funding. Mr Ivanov noted the importance of ensuring that these funds reach all people in need.

Moreover, one of the most significant aspects of attention for the prosecution corps is protecting people’s key rights and freedoms, including the right to work and adequate social support, Sergei Ivanov pointed out, accentuating the need to continue reacting swiftly to any breaches of the law in the social sector.

The Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office also emphasised that prosecutors should make a major contribution to fighting any manifestations of extremism. Xenophobia and calls for religious or ethnic animosity represent a direct threat to the unity and integrity of the state; it is the prosecution’s responsibility to promptly react to any unlawful activities to destabilise the Russian society.

The prosecution must also suppress any attempts to put pressure on businesses, Mr Ivanov remarked. Precise, impartial performance by the law enforcement and judicial systems is an important component for maintaining a prosperous, competitive business climate in the country. This work is particularly relevant in light of Russia’s accession to the WTO, as well as the formation of the Customs Union and the Common Economic Space.

In November 2012, a decision was made to improve the mechanisms for assigning state ranks to prosecutors. As instructed by the President of Russia, preparations are underway for reforming the system of preliminary investigation. Adjustments will also be made to the organisation of prosecutorial supervision over investigative activities. The measures taken must ultimately strengthen people’s faith in the rule of law, Sergei Ivanov stated. It is also imperative to continue anti-corruption expert appraisals for regulatory documents of state authorities at all levels, and to bring to light superfluous administrative barriers that immobilise people’s business initiatives.
