Ruslan Edelgeriyev had a meeting with Chairman of the 26th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Alok Sharma

January 13, 2022

Presidential Adviser and Special Presidential Representative on Climate Issues Ruslan Edelgeriyev had a meeting, via videoconference, with Chairman of the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Alok Sharma.

Both sides gave a high assessment of the results of the 26th Conference of the Parties (COP26) to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change that took place in Glasgow in November 2021. They discussed the further development of the global climate agenda and reaffirmed the need to carry out the adopted decisions, including those of the Glasgow Declaration on Forests and Land Use, which was also signed by Russia.

Mr Edelgeriyev told Mr Sharma about Russia’s efforts to create a voluntary system for implementing climate projects and a roadmap for implementing the Strategy of socioeconomic development with low greenhouse emissions through to 2050. Domestic climate projects will be tailored to the best world practices to ensure their recognition and to attract foreign investment. Russia is working for this at bilateral and multilateral venues. These moves will allow Russia to fulfil the goal set by the President of Russia for the national economy – to reach hydrocarbon neutrality no later than 2060.

The Presidential Adviser noted that in decarbonising the economy, it is important to adhere to a balanced approach and prevent deterioration in living standards of the population. The officials also talked about the methane problem, noting the need for further studying the sources of methane emissions and ways of reducing them.

Mr Edelgeriyev and Mr Sharma agreed to maintain contact.
