Meeting of the working group on drafting the Basic Principles of State Language Policy of the Russian Federation

Adviser to the President, Chair of the Presidential Council for State Policy on Promoting the Russian Language and Languages of the Peoples of the Russian Federation Yelena Yampolskaya held a meeting of the working group on drafting the Basic Principles of State Language Policy of the Russian Federation.

Created in January 2025, the working group includes representatives of the Presidential Executive Office, the Executive Office of the Government of Russia, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Federal Agency for Ethnic Affairs, leading Russian universities, research institutions, related non-profit organisations, and public associations.

Yelena Yampolskaya said in her remarks that the Basic Principles should not only define the aims, main principles, objectives and mechanisms for implementing the state language policy of the Russian Federation but also serve as a core document for developing and upgrading legislative and other normative legal acts that regulate issues related to preserving, developing and supporting the Russian language, the state languages of the republics, and other languages of the peoples of Russia, as well as promoting the Russian language globally.

The meeting participants discussed the draft structure and contents of the Basic Principles. In addition, they aligned the Basic Principles with the governmental Concept of State Language Policy and the draft Federal Law On the Languages of the Peoples of the Russian Federation.
