Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit took place in Beijing

Following the meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State, a package of documents was adopted on expanding cooperation within the organisation, in particular the Declaration on Building a Region of Lasting Peace and Common Prosperity, as well as an information statement.

It was decided at the meeting to grant Afghanistan the status of SCO observer state, while Turkey received the status of dialogue partner.

A narrow-format meeting of the heads of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation member states was held yesterday. It was attended by President of Russia Vladimir Putin, President of China Hu Jintao, President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of Kyrgyzstan Almazbek Atambayev, President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon and President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov.

The next SCO summit will be held in 2013 in Bishkek.
