President Vladimir Putin held a discussion on meeting the Russian economy's medium-term energy demands

November 22, 2006, The Kremlin, Moscow

The President called for urgent action to resolve all of the energy supply problems that have arisen in some regions with the beginning of winter.

Opening the meeting, Mr Putin noted that the measures currently being taken to develop electricity production are insufficient and also criticised the Government for not carrying out a number of presidential instructions signed in October.

Taking part in the meeting were members of the Government, the heads of the Federal Tariffs Service and the Federal Nuclear Industry Agency, the heads of the Presidential Executive Office, the directors of major energy companies Gazprom, RAO unified Energy Systems and the Siberian Coal and Energy Company.

Mr Putin instructed the Government to draw up mechanisms that would protect the interests of Russian energy resource consumers and effectively mitigate the effects of fluctuations on world energy markets.
