President Vladimir Putin spoke by telephone with Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica

Mr Putin congratulated Mr Kostunica on entering the UN. The Yugoslav President thanked him for Russia’s help in achieving this important aim.

The two Presidents discussed the situation in Kosovo. Both emphasised the need to resolve all problems on this territory through democratic means and in line with the resolutions of the UN General Assembly and with respect for Yugoslavia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Mr Putin and Mr Kostunica also discussed the realisation of the agreements reached at a recent high-level meeting in Moscow. In this connection, the Yugoslav President expressed his gratitude for resumed supplies of Russian natural gas to Yugoslavia and emphasised the importance of this act of the Russian Government.
