At the beginning of the bilateral meeting, Mr Rakhmonov informed Mr Putin about humanitarian corridors via Tajikistan for Afghan population relief.

In his meeting with Mr Rabbani, Mr Putin highlighted the internationally recognised Afghan Government’s long struggle for the liberation of its nation.

As he was opening a tripartite meeting with the Tajik and Afghan leaders, Mr Putin said that Russia had been long and consistently promoting the Afghan leadership’s efforts to free Afghanistan from terrorists.

Mr Putin said that the Russian policy aimed to create such a situation in Afghanistan in which the nation would have an opportunity of self-determination, peaceful life and establishing a state friendly toward all its neighbours, including Russia.

Mr Putin described the tripartite Dushanbe meeting in his press statement as extremely informative and productive.

The Russian, Tajik and Afghan Presidents summarised the tripartite meeting in a special statement.

The document said that, to shift Afghan settlement into political channels, it was necessary to unconditionally comply with anti-terrorist coalition demands—in particular, extradite the masterminds and organisers of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, and disband and fully disarm terrorist and extremist formations in the Taliban-controlled area.

The parties stressed the necessity of enhancing the role of the United Nations and all countries willing to promote political settlement in long-suffering Afghanistan.
