Sergei Ivanov visited the island of Iturup

Chief of Staff of the Presidential Executive Office Sergei Ivanov visited the island of Iturup as part of a working visit to the Far East Federal District.

Mr Ivanov inspected the new airport, which opened on September 22, learned about the airport’s history, visited the air traffic control centre and spoke with airport staff.

Mr Ivanov then visited the village of Kitovoye, where he inspected the reconstruction of the Kuril port centre in Kitovy Bay, where construction of a freight and passenger terminal is underway.

Mr Ivanov travelled to the town of Kurilsk, where he visited a local school, looked around the school’s sports field, spoke with students and teachers and also saw how work is going on building a culture and sports centre. Together with Deputy Prime Minister and Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District Yury Trutnev and Governor of Sakhalin Region Alexander Khoroshavin, Mr Ivanov also went for a walk in the town’s park, where he spoke with local residents.

The informal discussion with Kurilsk residents continued at the Children’s School of the Arts. Mr Ivanov discussed with the local people the town’s demographic situation, measures to provide people on the islands with affordable housing, the labour market situation, and issues concerning helping refugees from southeast Ukraine to settle in. 

Mr Ivanov also visited the Kurilsky Rybak Fish Hatchery and looked over one of the plant’s workshops. He then held a meeting on the Kuril Islands’ socioeconomic development at the plant’s management office.
