Presidential Aide Nikolai Patrushev chaired the first meeting of the Maritime Board of the Russian Federation.
The agenda covered the board’s key priorities as defined by the President. The participants stressed that the Maritime Board’s core mission is to serve as a focal point for federal and regional executive agencies on matters dealing with national maritime policies.
They went on to point out that the initiative to establish the Maritime Board resulted from, among other things, the need to bring the public administration of maritime affairs to a new level in view of the growing geopolitical tension and the unprecedented sanctions pressure Russia is facing.
The board members paid special attention to maritime activities aimed at promoting socioeconomic development for the country as a whole and its coastal regions, as well as expanding foreign economic ties.
In addition, they discussed ways to ensure stability in the World Ocean and defend Russia’s national interests in the Arctic. The agenda also touched upon domestic shipbuilding, developing ports and improving connectivity between seaports, inland waterways and international transport corridors.
Presentations on the present-day challenges in the maritime sector and ways of overcoming them included reports by Deputy Prime Minister – Presidential Plenipotentiary Envoy to the Far Eastern Federal District Yury Trutnev, Presidential Adviser Igor Levitin, Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko, Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Alexander Moiseyev, Head of the Federal Medical-Biological Agency Veronika Skvortsova, Director General of the United Shipbuilding Corporation Andrei Puchkov, Director General of State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom Alexei Likhachev, NOVATEK Chairman of the Management Board Leonid Mikhelson, Sovcomflot Board Chairman Sergei Frank, Murmansk Region Governor Andrei Chibis, Primorye Territory Governor Oleg Kozhemyako, and Arkhangelsk Region Governor Alexander Tsybulsky.
Established per Presidential Executive Order No 691 of August 13, 2024, the Maritime Board is tasked with implementing national maritime policies, defending the national interests of the Russian Federation and strengthening its defence capabilities in the World Ocean.
