Protection of children’s rights was the main issue discussed at the meeting chaired by Dmitry Medvedev.

Meeting with permanent members of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev announced having signed the law ratifying the new START Treaty between the United States and Russia that makes new cutbacks to the two countries’ strategic offensive weapons. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will exchange instruments of ratification very soon. 

The two main issues on the agenda were improving the investment climate and raising the quality of state regulation of the economy.

On Thursday Dmitry Medvedev visited the Okhotny Ryad metro station, where he inspected the operation of services responsible for passenger safety. The President was shown public notification and emergency call systems, as well as advanced mobile devices designed to detect idle objects and explosives.

The President spoke about his views of the situation in Russia and the world, the main principles of Russia’s modernisation strategy, and presented a number of Russia’s specific proposals and initiatives.

Dmitry Medvedev critised security at major transport hubs stating that measures to ensure safety are unsatisfactory as a whole, even without considering the recent terrorist attack. The President demanded tighter security measures and control over compliance with applicable legal requirements.

Dmitry Medvedev and Yves Leterme discussed topical issues of trade and economic cooperation between Russia and Belgium, including in the energy sector.

The discussion focused on application of restraint measures to individuals suspected or accused of committing crimes.

Dmitry Medvedev held an expanded meeting of the board of the Federal Security Service (FSB).

Dmitry Medvedev answered journalists’ questions about the tragedy at Domodedovo Airport.

Dmitry Medvedev expressed condolences to the injured and to families of the victims.

Relations with NATO concerning antimissile defence and specifically the European antimissile shield were the subjects of discussion.

The prospects for promoting a favourable investment climate were the subject of discussion.

Dmitry Medvedev announced the signing of an Executive Order appointing Alexander Bastrykin Chairman of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation.

Dmitry Medvedev met with Primate of the Orthodox Church of Cyprus, Archbishop Chrysostomos II of Nova Justiniana and All Cyprus, and Patriarch Kirill of Moscow and All Russia at the Kremlin.
